9 Tips for Betting on NFL
Everyone knows that the NFL is the public’s favorite sport to bet – by a wide margin. But, what most people don’t know, is that it’s also the toughest to beat. Tight lines and enticing traps lure the public towards certain danger each week. We have consistently won betting on the NFL over the past 25 years by doing it our way: focusing our NFL picks primarily on NFL totals, selective teasers and individual player props.
Below are our nine tips for navigating through a successful NFL Season.
Betting Tip #1
Always separate entertainment vs. profit.
Historically, the most heavily-wagered games are not the most profitable for gamblers. Resist the temptation to bet on the stand alone games – Thursday Night, Sunday Night, and Monday Night – simply because they are the only game on TV. More money is lost on these games than all others combined. When considering whether to wager on the game, think about it as if it was one of the other dozen games on Sunday. If there’s an edge, play it; otherwise, relish in the fact that you can relax watching these games without losing money on it as those around you likely do.
Betting Tip #2
Watch the injury wire each week.
More so than ever before, in today’s NFL, players come off and on the active roster with great frequency. Be sure to stay vigilant on whether key players are out, doubtful, or simply dinged up and then, watch for over adjustments on the line. The bookmakers tend to over compensate for injury impact.
Betting Tip #3
Always line shop.
Football spreads, especially the NFL, are incredibly tight. A point or even a half point can make a huge difference in your bottom line profit over the course of a season. Always search multiple sources for the best number out there and if your only book has a bad number, DO NOT BET THE GAME.
Betting Tip #4
Pay attention to the key numbers.
Betting Tip #5
Always stay disciplined.
As we have preached over and over for years, the golden rule of gambling is to manage your bankroll and only wager what you can afford to lose. This is true in all sports, but especially in the NFL, where the schedule of kickoff times provides the lure of chasing your earlier losses. Sportsbooks make their yearly nut on people chasing their losses on the “I need to win this so I can avoid a losing week”. Don’t be a sucker. Chasing has ruined more lives than we care to remember.
Betting Tip #6
Not all Teasers are created equal.
While we generally stay away from teasers and parlays on the whole, the NFL is one exception. We make good money every year teasing NFL sides. We are very selective and look for teasers that can take the line through the key numbers of 3,4, 7 and 10. Three team teasers paying +170 can be smart bets at times, though finding them has been harder and harder to do as the books have slowly caught on. Hunt around and try to get them while you can.
Betting Tip #7
Look for value in individual player prop bets.
While we have never played fantasy football, the rise of the industry has helped us build our bankroll through the increase in player prop bets available. All of the data circulating out there for fantasy heads has led to a plethora of individual player prop options in most books, especially for prime time games.
Betting Tip #8
Have fun.
You work hard to have enough disposable income to bet on the weekends. Don’t waste it. If winning as a sports gambler was easy, everyone would quit their jobs and do it. While you certainly will improve your chances at profiting with The Hot Picks team in your corner, it is important to remember that you should be betting the games to make the time you spend watching them with friends and family more enjoyable — not to make this month’s rent. As much as we want you to win, we don’t want you to lose even more. Always manage your bankroll and never bet above your means or to pay the bills.
Betting Tip #9
Seek a Professional Edge.
Just like you wouldn’t try to design your own house if you aren’t an architect or operate on a broken leg if you aren’t a doctor, let the professionals do what they get paid to do. The Hot Picks team works seven days a week to find the advantage plays and pass them on to our users. Don’t go it alone. Join The Hot Picks team, get our NFL picks and let us help you build your bankroll.
Best of luck and thank you for being part of The Hot Picks Nation!

Don’t Lose your Bankroll Doing it All on Your Own
NFL Betting Tips
You can’t talk about sports gambling without talking about the NFL. It’s the public’s favorite thing to bet by far. And it’s the hardest to beat. We always say this: the NFL stands for Not. For. Long. for having your bankroll. The Hot Picks team will help you win your NFL picks our way, through totals, player props, teasers… We bet some obscure teasers, people don’t even know about. Don’t lose your bankroll trying to win the NFL on your own.
NFL vs March Madness
People mistakenly think that the Super Bowl is the biggest sports betting event of the year in Las Vegas. Absolutely not. March Madness college basketball sports betting supersedes Super Bowl every single season, and we are here to tell you at The Hot Picks, we bet a lot of the first and second rounds of March Madness. We make a lot of the bets on the smaller schools, the first half bets, a lot of stuff the public’s not betting. So what we do is we take our knowledge and we are sharing it with you before we even get down ourselves on these games.
How You Bet is as Important as What You Bet
How you bet on the NFL is as important as what you bet. The Hot Picks team will tell you about our NFL picks, shopping for betting lines, not betting more than three percent on any one game. Also, don’t force any plays at the end of the day. You know, people love to do that. They love to just bet because it’s a game on the board and it’s something left to bet on. Absolutely the wrong thing to do and will only lead to trouble.

- Futures Bets
- Parlay Bets
- Teaser Bets
- Totals Bet
- Unit
- Open vs. Closing Odds
Point Spread
The handicap, or head start, which the favorite gives to the underdog for betting purposes.
Cover
To beat the point spread by the required number of points. When you win, you have “covered the spread.”
Over/Under
A bet on whether the combined total of the points/goals scored by the two teams will exceed or be less than a specified number.
Moneyline
A bet where no point spread is involved and is based solely on which team will win the game.
Straight Bet
A wager on just one team.
Prop Bets
Short for Proposition Bet, a special wager offered by the sportsbook on various things that can transpire in a game. For example, who will score the first touchdown, or will a receiver have over X yards receiving in the game.
Futures Bets
Bets placed on an event taking place sometime in the future. (e.g. betting during the regular season on who will win the Super Bowl winner; betting on the Presidential Election, betting who will win the NBA or NFL MVP award).
Parlay Bets
One bet on two or more teams/outcomes playing in separate games. The odds are greater if you win, however, all selections must be correct for the parlay to win. If you bet a 4 team parlay, it may pay 10-1, but if you win 3 of the games and lose 1, you lose the bet. In the event of a push or a game cancellation in one game, the parlay reverts to the next lower number (e.g. a 4-team parlay becomes a 3-team parlay).
Teaser Bets
A bet on two or more teams where the line on each team is adjusted a certain amount of points. For example, if Washington is +6 vs. Dallas and New York is +3 vs Philly, you can play a 6 point teaser in which you have Washington +12 and New York +9. However, similar to a parlay, all selections in the teaser must be correct for the bet to win and with some books, a push on one bet equals a loss of the overall bet.
Totals Bet
A bet where the bettor bets that the total score combined by the two teams will be over or under the number set by the bookmaker.
Unit
A basic measurement used by bettors to better understand a record. Each bettor’s unit can be a different dollar amount based on their bankroll and preferred risk.
Open vs. Closing Odds
Opening odds are the very first odds/lines that are listed for a specific game and it’s the first chance for the betting public to see what bookmakers think of that game. Closing odds are the odds offered by bookmakers just before the game starts and are based on how the betting public has wagered leading up to the game.

NFL sides are the hardest bet to win in all of sports due to the parity. The Hot Picks focuses on NFL totals and prop bets for our NFL picks.

How much should I consider betting NFL futures before the season?
